So the other day I got an email from a "new" voice over coaching website telling me that they have gathered all the best coaches and put them all in one place. After chuckling out loud my first thought was "that was already done several years ago" but whatever, no idea is an original idea anymore.
So naturally I went to the site to check out these supposed best coaches and I was really surprised to see that of the bank of talent I hardly recognized a few of them, and one was literally the laughing stock of the industry a few years ago for blatantly ripping off a veteran talent's logo and catch phrase.
Clearly anyone with a microphone and a few years of experience believes they are qualified to coach these days. Well after 15 plus years of doing this full time I still don't believe that I am qualified to be a coach. However, I do passionately believe I am fully equipped to be a life coach to people in this industry. To guide, direct, answer, challenge and question.
One of the biggest challenges in finding the right coach is figuring out who they are, what experience they have and why they are qualified to even give you advice in the first place. Well if you have followed me on social media you know who I am. Father, husband, lover of animals and inspirer and fearer of God. You know that I work a lot and do very well in promo, narration, radio imaging and commercial. I am represented by major talent agencies on both coasts as well as dozens of regional agents in between as well as having two managers.
So instead of having to figure out who I am and having to build a relationship from scratch you know me and we can just hit the ground running and help lay out the plan to build upon what you have already started.
Truth is there are a lot of people out there that just want to take your money and don't care if they leave you with anything. I think about my clients constantly, always thinking of ways I can help mold their brand, performance and skill set.
Why didn't I just join one of the many pre-existing websites of coaches? Mainly because the lone wolf in me never wants to be attached to or accredited with anyone else. I am my own being and brand and I take my reputation as seriously as much as you should your career.
Truth is coaching is crucial to growing as a talent and finding things you never knew existed within you. To this day I still coach at least once a month.
